True Love Waits: an alternate view
There's a building on the corner,
Which holds the home of the Smith.
And the man inside has no patience or time
For folklore or legend or myth.

'Cause he's never believed in his lifetime,
In anyOne greater than him,
He's never surrendered or pleaded or prayed
When life became scary or grim.

His God is his reason, his God is his brain,
He won't look for gods 'cause he knows it's in vain,
And he never wonders why people choose faith
He assumes that they're duped or insane.

He's never imagined it otherwise,
And heaven ain't part of what's real,
And why should love wait if you want it?
Go ahead and just do what you feel.

There's a young man out at the movies
With his favourite girl at his side,
And he's dreaming of popping her cherry
And she's dreaming of being his bride.

But her doubts are just hurdles for jumping,
And her faith is a game in her head,
And everything's going to be different when
He once gets her into his bed.

His God is his gonads, his God is his prong,
His God's more important than her sense of wrong,
And he never wonders why she wants to wait,
Or what makes his need so strong.

Her own feelings aren't as important
As pleasing the man of her dreams,
And why should love wait for the lover
To prove that he's more than he seems?

It don't matter what all the priests say,
'Cause priests don't know squat about sex,
And God in his Heaven is only a millstone
To hang around gullible necks.

The future will always look rosy,
When the lust of the moment is all.
Amidst all this passion it's gone out of fashion
To think of the future at all...

There's a million young men and women
Who've given their virtue too fast.
They know sex distracts you from thinking
Or building a love that will last.

And their destinies lie before them,
Single mothers and serial dads,
The women raise kids who will do just the same
And the men think they're devilish lads.

Their God is resentment, their God is despair,
Their God is the pain that they never will share,
And they never wonder how life could be different
If only they'd taken more care.

And denial is a locked empty stable,
And maybe some people abstain,
In spite of the fact that it's boring and hard
Because that's not the worst kind of pain.

And whether God's real doesn't matter.
His rules aren't just up there for show,
And that's why love waits for the careful
Who'd rather hold on than let go.

And what you believe is important
But so are the lessons you learn,
And true love waits for the Christians
'Cause it's better to marry than burn,
And it's not just in hell that you burn.

Usual disclaimer: not a Christian, don't believe abstinence is best for everyone, don't believe kids should be left in ignorance about sex, not anti-abortion or creationist or Flat Earther. Just playing God's advocate here.

Well written, I would enjoy singing it at a filk, all but the last two grafs, which seem tacked on only to adapt it for conservative Christians. There's a middle road left out of the song, worth singing. Maybe I'll write an alternate ending.

Well, none of it was tacked on, though my idea may have been a bit shorter than Tom's. And yes indeed, there's a middle road, but I was aiming to be the opposition rather than express my own convictions, whatever they may be.

EDIT: oh, and by all means sing it if you wish. If you credit me *and* change the lyrics, I'd be happier if you say which bit you'd changed before you start, so people know which is whose. Apart from that, go for it. :)

I was being more hypothetical, actually. I was sitting in the coffee shop in front of the laptop intending to provide an alternative last two verses but nothing I plunked out worked, so I bailed. Maybe I'll try again later. JUst so you know, I wouldn't sing a changed lyric without singing the original first, with credit where it's due. I think I'll hunt up the music...

I like it. There is a message worth thinking about in it.
What they all said (4) . Unless... You wanted to say something?
