Automatic updates...
I'm fairly sure I didn't have them turned on before that last batch, but they were on when I powered up this morning, and even though I'd turned them off again, the offending update kept trying to install itself and restart my system. I had to remove it again.

I have also discovered that automatic updates try to install themselves when I've got my back turned. I'm sure I've got them turned off, but they creep back on again.

I'm starting to wonder about Linux.

I actually have a little Ubuntu partition on one of my drives, but I've never been able to work out what to do with it. I couldn't go over to it permanently, because I play too many games. (Uru's coming back!)

I suggest VirtualBox from Sun. As long as you have enough memory (1GB RAM at least) it lets you install other operating systems in a "virtual box" so you can get a feel for them and get used to them without having to jusp straight in at the deep end. It's pretty easy to use, with 'wizards' to guide you through setting up a new virtual machine.

(There is also VMWare, which is much the same, but VMWare is a /lot/ more hungry. The download is around 160MB vs. 27MB and the rest is much the same.)

Note that you can do the reverse, run Windows in VirtualBox under Linux, but it's messier to install and get running smoothly.

When the yellow shield appears, click it and select custom installation. Uncheck the box for that update then check the box when prompted "do not remind me again". It stops it attempting to install that update.

At least, it does for both me a The Bloke.
