| Why is it that when fans write books about being fans, the first thing they do is perpetuate all the stupid myths that put people off fans in the first place, and then say "Of course I'm not like that, ha ha"?
None of us is Like That. Even the ones who are, a bit, are People. I hate this idea of the Other Fans, of creating a Them that you can sneakily edge away from and then point and hoot like all the rest. If anything were likely to make me start using the word "mundane" in a pejorative sense, it would be that--and I wouldn't be applying it to the complete non-fans, the ordinary nice decent people who don't happen to share our tastes, but to the hypocrites who do share them but don't want to be lumped in with the rest of us. They *want* to be mundane. They *choose* to be mundane. So be it.
